Germany’s Green Leader Warns of “Disappointment Winter” Ahead of Key Vote

The Green Party parliamentary group leader, Britta Haßelmann, has expressed strong backing for the three candidates proposed for upcoming elections to the Federal Constitutional Court. In an interview with Politico, Haßelmann stated her confidence in the nominees’ legal expertise and emphasized the urgency of fully staffing the court.

Reflecting on the failed election attempt earlier this summer, Haßelmann attributed the setback to a comprehensive failure on the part of Health Minister Jens Spahn and the governing coalition as a whole. She also noted a perceived lack of leadership demonstrated by Christian Democratic Union leader Friedrich Merz during the process. Haßelmann further highlighted the negative campaigning experienced by incumbent judge Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf.

Looking ahead to the government’s planned reform agenda, Haßelmann cautioned that a lack of swift and decisive action could lead to widespread disappointment. She suggested a rapid acceleration of efforts is needed to avoid a period of disillusionment.
