DHL Warns AfD Rise Threatens German Economy

Concerns are growing within the German business community regarding the potential impact of continued support for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, particularly on the country’s economic stability and investment climate. Tobias Meyer, CEO of DHL Group, voiced these anxieties in an interview with “Focus” magazine.

Meyer emphasized that a perception of instability abroad stemming from the rise of right-wing political movements is creating apprehension among international investors. He underscored the continued importance of political stability for Germany’s attractiveness as an investment destination.

The DHL CEO indicated that a minority government led by the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), potentially reliant on the AfD for support, would be unfavorable for the company. He stated a degree of satisfaction with the present government structure, given the existing parliamentary circumstances.

Meyer acknowledged a perceived improvement in sentiment within the business world under the leadership of CDU leader Friedrich Merz, while pointing out that concrete economic indicators have yet to reflect this optimism. He specifically noted a lack of momentum in the German economy and a concerning decline in the nation’s international competitiveness. The challenges, as he described them, include excessive bureaucracy and persistently high energy prices, which are hindering the ability of German companies to effectively compete in the global marketplace.
