The Police Union (GdP) has voiced its opposition to plans by Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) to involve the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) in countering drone threats within Germany.
Andreas Roßkopf, Head of the GdP for the Federal Police division, stated in an interview with “Rheinische Post” that the priority should be equipping the Federal Police, along with state police forces, with the necessary resources and capabilities to address drone incidents over critical infrastructure. He emphasized that any involvement of the Bundeswehr should occur within a framework of mutual assistance and under the responsibility of the Federal Police. Roßkopf underscored the police’s fundamental responsibility for ensuring domestic security.
The GdP representative also criticized years of insufficient investment in law enforcement technology and training. He suggested that Bundeswehr assistance should be limited to scenarios involving natural disasters such as floods, wildfires, or earthquakes, or in the event of an internal state of emergency.
The proposed involvement of the Bundeswehr comes in response to a rise in drone incidents across Germany. Plans are underway to amend the Air Security Law, potentially authorizing the armed forces to shoot down unmanned aerial objects under specific conditions.
