The German Pharmaceutical Association (ABDA) has voiced strong opposition to proposals put forward by Federal Minister of Health Nina Warken (CDU) regarding expanded roles for Pharmacy Technical Assistants (PTAs) within pharmacies. Thomas Preis, President of ABDA, expressed significant reservations regarding the proposed changes, emphasizing the potential risks to patient safety.
Minister Warken’s plans include the possibility of PTAs being granted sole responsibility for managing pharmacies during off-peak hours. Preis argued that pharmaceutical products require a high degree of expertise and vigilance, as incorrect administration, inadequate advice, or inappropriate substitutions could have detrimental health consequences.
He highlighted the critical role of the pharmacist in ensuring medication safety, drawing a parallel to the aviation industry. Preis stated that just as a pilot and not the aircraft engineer, is responsible for safe flight, a pharmacist must be present to oversee the dispensing of medication.
ABDA’s position directly challenges the Minister’s stated aims of empowering pharmacists and broadening their skill set. Preis indicated that significant discussions and negotiations will be necessary before any legislative draft is finalized, suggesting a potentially lengthy process of review and modification. The association emphasized the need for ongoing oversight and pharmaceutical expertise to guarantee safe and effective patient care.
