A concerning lack of solidarity with victims of antisemitism is being observed in Germany, according to Felix Klein, the Federal Government’s Commissioner for Jewish Affairs.
Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” Klein noted a significant surge in antisemitic crimes since the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023. He expressed deep concern that Jewish citizens are feeling severely unsettled due to the widespread absence of public support and a subsequent deterioration in their quality of life.
Klein described a series of increasingly common behaviors, including individuals with Jewish-sounding names altering their identities when ordering taxis or food and removing visible signs of Jewish identity such as David Stars from necklaces. He emphasized that these actions contribute to a sense of invisibility for Jewish people within German society, fostering an environment where Jewish identity is perceived as foreign. This trend highlights a broader issue of diminishing public displays of Jewish affiliation.
