Several hundred people gathered in Berlin on Thursday, staging a demonstration directly in front of the Federal Foreign Office to voice their opposition to Israel’s actions. A significant police presence was deployed to maintain order and prevent demonstrators from approaching the ministry building.
The demonstration, organized under the banner “Solidarity with the Sumud Flotilla – Stop the Gaza Genocide – No Weapons Deliveries to Israel” referenced the Sumud Flotilla, a convoy of ships carrying aid for Gaza, the vast majority of which has been intercepted by the Israeli Navy.
Protesters demanded the imposition of sanctions against Israel. However, earlier in the day, the German government reiterated its rejection of such measures. “A decision regarding potential sanctioning at the European level is currently not under consideration” a government spokesperson stated to the dts news agency. The demonstration highlighted ongoing tensions surrounding the conflict and the varied stances taken by international actors.
