Authorities have confirmed the attack on a Manchester synagogue on Thursday as a terrorist incident. Laurence Taylor, head of the police’s counter-terrorism division, announced the designation this afternoon, describing the assault as “a truly destructive and horrific act” perpetrated against the Jewish community during the observance of Yom Kippur.
Police have identified the perpetrator and arrested two additional individuals in connection with the incident. Details regarding the individuals’ identities are being withheld for security reasons. Investigations are ongoing.
The attack resulted in the deaths of the suspect and two other individuals. In addition, three people are currently in critical condition, according to police reports.
The assault occurred during Yom Kippur, a significant day of religious observance when synagogue attendance is particularly high. Those attending services at the synagogue initially sheltered within the building before being evacuated by authorities.
Emergency calls were initially received by authorities reporting a vehicle striking pedestrians followed by a knife attack. Police subsequently engaged and neutralized the suspected perpetrator.
