The need for renewed dialogue with Russia remains essential, according to former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. While the foundation for a productive conversation has been absent since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Stoltenberg emphasized that such engagement will inevitably be necessary. “Russia isn’t going to disappear; it will remain our neighbor” he stated in an interview.
Stoltenberg, who led NATO from 2014 to 2024, reiterated his long-held belief in the importance of maintaining communication with Russia. He believes that constructive dialogue can be achieved through a combination of military strength and credible deterrence. Crucially, he added that Ukraine itself must engage in negotiations with Russia to reach a resolution to the ongoing conflict through an agreement.
Addressing concerns surrounding potential political sensitivities, Stoltenberg also commented on his interactions with former US President Donald Trump during his first term in office, indicating a consistent effort to foster communication. He expressed confidence that the US government understands the independent nature of the Nobel Peace Prize selection process and is unlikely to be negatively impacted by Trump not receiving the award next week, a matter unrelated to the Norwegian government’s purview.
