Kyiv has sharply condemned Russia’s intensifying attacks targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, with Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev, issuing a forceful appeal for greater European resolve. In an interview with “Bild”, Makeiev characterized the deliberate strikes against civilian energy facilities as a core element of Russia’s “genocidal war” pointing to the prolonged periods of darkness and lack of power endured by Ukrainian citizens. He insisted that only a demonstrably stronger Western stance can halt this escalating campaign of terror.
The Ambassador underscored Germany’s crucial role in shaping Europe’s response. He stated that Berlin’s leadership is pivotal, arguing that European unity and action are contingent on Germany’s willingness to take decisive steps. Makeiev specifically urged clear and immediate European decisions regarding several key areas. These include significantly curtailing Russia’s energy revenue streams, establishing a trajectory for the utilization of frozen Russian assets – a contentious issue amongst European nations – and providing substantial, direct support to Ukraine’s struggling energy sector.
Furthermore, Makeiev stressed the urgent need for massive investment within Ukraine’s military production capacity. While previous Western aid packages have focused primarily on providing weaponry, he implicitly criticized the current approach, suggesting that fostering internal Ukrainian arms production is essential for long-term security and lessening reliance on external supply chains. His remarks signify a growing frustration within Kyiv regarding the perceived hesitancy of some European nations to adopt a more aggressive policy towards Russia.
