The German Police Union (GdP) is intensifying its criticism of the slow pace of justice for individuals attacking law enforcement officers and others with fireworks, particularly following the tumultuous New Year’s Eve celebrations. Andreas Roßkopf, the GdP’s national chairman, voiced his frustration, stating that penalties for assaults on police personnel “must follow swiftly and with the utmost severity”. He lamented the lack of tangible political progress following last year’s widespread outrage over the violence.
Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig’s recent announcement of intentions to increase penalties for attacks on police officers has been met with skepticism by the GdP. Roßkopf underscored the critical need for rapid implementation, questioning the deterrent effect of prolonged legal proceedings and lenient sentencing. “Months-long trials and moderate judgments are not a solution” he emphasized. “These are not minor offenses; they constitute violations of the Explosives Act.
The incidents in Berlin last year, which saw significant damage and injuries caused by fireworks and explosive projectiles, have served as a stark reminder of the dangers involved. Roßkopf warned that these objects are inherently dangerous explosives capable of inflicting serious harm, potentially fatal and highlighted the increasingly untenable situations in certain areas of major German cities and railway hubs. Many officers describe New Year’s Eve as “highly challenging” due to the constant risk of injury.
Beyond accelerating judicial processes, Roßkopf also advocated for strengthened border controls. He argued that the Federal Police and Customs officials must vigorously monitor borders with Poland and the Czech Republic to intercept the illegal smuggling of fireworks. However, he stressed that the effectiveness of these border measures is contingent upon the courts’ ability to swiftly and consistently enforce the law on perpetrators. The GdP’s stance reflects a growing concern regarding public safety and the perceived inadequacy of the legal system’s response to escalating acts of violence against those tasked with maintaining order. The union’s political pressure aims to force decisive action before the next New Year’s Eve.
