In the train crash that occurred on Sunday evening in southern Spain, the number of fatalities has risen to at least 39 people. According to official reports released on Monday, more than 152 individuals were injured, with 48 admitted to hospitals and 13 placed on intensive care units. Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente has stated that the death toll is not yet final and could increase further. The accident took place near the town of Adamuz in the province of Córdoba, when an Iryo high‑speed train operated by the Italian company Trenitalia derailed and entered the adjacent track. There, it collided head‑on with an oncoming Renfe high‑speed train. Both trains were traveling at high speeds: the Iryo bound from Málaga to Madrid and the Renfe train heading from Madrid to Huelva. The exact cause of the accident remains unknown. The derailed train had only been in service since 2022 and had undergone its last inspection just four days before the incident. Minister Puente described the crash as “extremely strange” because it happened on a straight, recently renovated section of track. An investigation will seek to clarify the concrete reasons behind the tragedy.
