A second suspect, an Iranian national who was temporarily detained regarding his possible involvement in the attack on the Berlin Christopher Street Day, has reportedly been released. The “Spiegel” reported on Monday, citing internal information, that the man was released from police custody on Sunday evening. Initially, investigators suspected he may have been a passenger in the vehicle, but those leading the inquiry found no basis to confirm the suspicion against him. Consequently, it remains uncertain whether the alleged assailant, Abdul B., acted alone.
The attacker drove a small van into Berlin’s Tiergarten around 10 p.m. on Saturday, where CSD participants were celebrating. Subsequently, he reportedly attacked passersby with a machete. The incident resulted in 29 injuries and the death of one woman. Abdul B. was located in an allotment garden in Spandau on Sunday evening and was shot by police during an operation.
