Greens Urge Germany to Dismantle Mini‑Job System, Shift Workers into Social‑Insurance‑Covered Employment

Acting group leader Andreas Audretsch of the Greens has called for the abolition of Minijobs in their current form. Audretsch told RTL and ntv that these tiny jobs should be transformed into regular, social‑security‑contributory employment. He argues that Minijobs would only be justified in specific circumstances-such as for students or retirees-and should exist “only where they do not displace or replace regular work”.

Audretsch says people are increasingly pushed into ever smaller jobs, which drives many into poverty later in life. “That’s the problem: people end up not working enough hours. If we want them to work more, we have to create the right conditions” he explained. He added that shaming workers is the wrong approach and criticized the union for following that very path.
