Germany and Australia Announce Deepening Security, Climate and Trade Ties Amid Shifting Global Dynamics

Germany and Australia announced their intent to deepen cooperation on security and climate issues during a joint statement released by Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) on Thursday. The two leaders met in Canberra to discuss challenges posed by an evolving geostrategic environment and to affirm a partnership that links Europe with the Indo‑Pacific.

The statement stresses a firm commitment to strengthening the rules of the international system, protecting peace and economic prosperity, and advancing sustainable development, civil society, gender equality, responsible state action and human rights. It underscores a vigorous pledge to a multilateral, rules‑based trading system centered on the World Trade Organization and calls for support of negotiations on a free‑trade agreement between Australia and the EU.

Germany and Australia aim to broaden their partnership particularly in renewable energy and critical minerals. They welcomed progress in developing hydrogen supply chains and opening new trade corridors between Australia and Europe. Wong and Wadephul also highlighted the importance of multilateral cooperation to promote peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
