Dobrindt Defends Hungarian 8‑Year Sentence of German Activist Maja T.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) has declared the controversial eight‑year prison sentence handed down to non‑binary German citizen Maja T. by a Hungarian court to be inevitable. “Maja T. belongs to a left‑extremist group that attacked other people in Budapest with batons, rubber hammers and other weapons” Dobrindt told the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland”. “During those attacks serious bodily harm occurred, and one person suffered a skull fracture. That must lead to a conviction”. He defended the Hungarian trial, adding that since the alleged crimes were committed in Hungary he had no objection to the proceedings or the verdict.

Maja T. is accused in Germany-along with other defendants currently on trial there-of assaulting and, in some cases, seriously injuring several alleged right‑wing extremists in Budapest in February 2023. Germany’s Federal Constitutional Court had earlier ruled the requested extradition of Maja T. to Hungary unlawful. Nevertheless, the Berlin Attorney General’s Office reports that a binding guarantee statement has been issued to secure Maja T.’s return to Germany.
