Leipzig Edge Past Köln 2‑1; Baumgartner’s Brace Propels RB to Fourth Place

In the opening Sunday fixture of the 21st Bundesliga round, 1. FC Köln fell 1‑2 to RB Leipzig. The game was highlighted by fiercely contested duels and several VAR calls. In the 29th minute, Leipzig gained the lead when Christoph Baumgartner headed a ball from a free‑kick by David Raum into the net. The first half ended with Leipzig in the fore, the score still 1‑0.

After the half‑time break, Köln fought back. In the 51st minute, Jan Thielmann equalised for his side from a rebound inside the box. Five minutes later, Baumgartner struck again, restoring Leipzig’s advantage at 2‑1. In the closing minutes the home side pushed hard for another equaliser, but Leipzig’s defence stayed solid and the goal proved beyond reach.

With the result, Leipzig move up into fourth place in the table, while Köln remain tenth. Köln will travel to Stuttgart for their next league match on Saturday, whereas Leipzig already have a DFB‑Pokal clash against Bayern Munich scheduled for Wednesday.
