Germany Hits Record 497.5 Million Guest Nights in 2025 as Hotels Dip and Camping Soars

Germany’s tourism industry set a new record in 2025, registering 497.5 million overnight stays-a 0.3 percent increase over the previous record year of 2024, according to preliminary figures released by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on Wednesday.

December 2025 proved particularly strong, with 32.0 million overnight stays-3.6 percent more than December 2024-marking the highest monthly figure ever recorded. Domestic guests contributed 413.7 million stays, up 0.7 percent from the previous year. Overseas guests, however, fell 1.8 percent to 83.8 million stays, a decline attributed partly to the fact that the 2024 UEFA European Championship, held in June and July, had drawn many foreign visitors. Consequently, foreigners accounted for 16.8 percent of total tourist overnight stays in 2025, compared to 17.2 percent in 2024.

Room‑based accommodations-hotels, inns, and guesthouses-experienced a modest decline of 0.4 percent in 2025 relative to 2024. Holiday housing stayed almost flat, down by only 0.2 percent. In contrast, camping sites saw robust growth: 4.2 percent more overnight stays compared with 2024, and a 24.9 percent surge relative to the pre‑COVID year of 2019. Other tourism‑related lodging, including medical and rehabilitation clinics and training homes, reported a 1.4 percent increase in overnight stays over the previous year.

In December 2025, Destatis counted 32.0 million overnight stays in Germany, a 3.6 percent rise over December 2024. Domestic guests accounted for 25.4 million stays, up 3.5 percent from the same month in 2024, while overseas guests rose 4.0 percent to 6.7 million stays.
