After Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder (CDU) presented new key points for a driver’s licence reform on Wednesday afternoon, the German Federation of Driving Instructors (BVF) reacted with sharp criticism.
“The reform proposal is absolutely terrifying” said vice‑chair Kurt Bartels, quoted in the “Rheinische Post” (Thursday edition). “We see it as a massive attack on traffic safety. The system in Germany is built on road safety, and Mr. Schnieder simply erases that”.
Schnieder’s proposal would allow students to acquire the material for the theory exam not only in classroom settings but also via digital platforms such as learning apps. Bartels argued, “There are many subjects that can only be taught face‑to‑face. During the Corona period we saw that distance learning does not produce better results-in fact, the opposite is true. No money can realistically be saved. These are merely political statements that ignore the reality”.
