German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) announced that checks at all of Germany’s land borders will continue. According to Bild, the temporary internal border controls, which were scheduled to end on 15 March 2026, will be extended for an additional six months. The government says this step responds to the ongoing security situation. Sources from government circles report that the notification has already been sent to the European Commission in Brussels. Because systematic checks across the Schengen area are normally prohibited, this formal procedure is mandatory.
Dobrindt told the paper, “We are extending border controls on our borders with neighboring countries”. He added that these checks are a key element of Germany’s reorganisation of its migration policy.
