Greens Accuse Economy Minister Reiche of Inaction Over Germany’s Low Gas Reserves Ahead of Winter

The Greens have accused Economy Minister Katherina Reiche of inaction over Germany’s low gas inventory. Michel Kellner, the Greens’ spokesperson on energy policy, told the “Rheinische Post” (Wednesday edition) that “the situation is worsening, especially with the cold weather on the horizon”. He added that in the Baltic Sea ships cannot unload because of ice, and that in Bavaria the storage tanks are so depleted that gas must flow in from Austria. He warned that without the good preparation of Germany’s neighbours “it would be tight”.

Kellner said Reiche has dismissed the Greens’ warnings since August and now must explain the measures she intends to take for the coming heating season. “A normal winter should not create such risks” he said. According to the Greens, Reiche is scheduled to answer questions from the Bundestag’s economic committee in a private video conference at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. At Reiche’s request, Klaus Müller, head of the Federal Network Agency, will also attend.
