Prior to the cabinet session in Neuhardenberg, the Klimaunion, which is made up of members from the CDU and CSU, has urged Chancellor Friedrich Merz to elevate climate protection to a top priority issue. Thomas Heilmann, the Chairman of the Klimaunion and former CDU Member of Parliament, informed the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” that during his recent visit to Hürtgenwald, Merz had figuratively “decreed extra lessons” for climate deniers and announced his commitment to aggressively combat climate change.
Heilmann demanded that the cabinet session must deliver a clear message: that Germany remains committed to its climate protection goals while simultaneously building resilience against heat, drought, and extreme weather events. He emphasized that climate protection and climate adaptation must be seen as intertwined topics. “Whose acts decisively today saves lives, protects our prosperity, and prevents even higher costs tomorrow,” he asserted.
The Klimaunion is a national association of members from the CDU and CSU, focusing its efforts on climate policies aligned with the 1.5-degree Celsius target.
