North German State Labels AfD Chapter as Extremist, Urges Unified Federal Response

The State Security Service of Lower Saxony has classified the AfD’s state association in that country as an extremist initiative. As a result, the party is now listed as an observation target, Interior Minister Daniela Behrens (SPD) announced on Tuesday.

The classification stems from the service’s assessment that the AfD Niedersachsen aligns with right‑wing extremism. Several points were cited in support of this view:
” an ethnically‑cultural conception of the nation that clashes with the principles of a liberal democratic constitutional order;
” a blanket devaluation of specific human groups;
” the contemptuous portrayal of the democratic rule of law; and
” backing of far‑right organisations.

The report noted that the AfD Niedersachsen has not established a counterbalance to extremist tendencies within the party; rather, it has supported such tendencies.

“The evaluation is clear: the greatest danger to our society comes from right‑wing extremism, and the AfD Niedersachsen is unequivocally aligned with that phenomenon” Behrens said. She also urged a unified national approach to dealing with extremism.
