In 2025 the German hospitality sector generated a nominal revenue increase of 1.4 % while real revenue fell by 2.1 % compared with the previous year, according to preliminary figures released by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on Thursday.
Within the sector, accommodation businesses reported a real revenue decline of 2.0 % and a nominal rise of 0.8 %. Restaurants and cafés, on the other hand, saw real sales drop 2.2 % but nominal sales climb 1.8 % year over year.
Monthly comparisons show that, after calendar‑ and season‑adjustments, December 2025 experienced a real revenue drop of 1.2 % and a nominal decline of 0.6 % versus November. Compared with December 2024, real revenue in December was 2.0 % lower, while nominal revenue was 1.6 % higher. In November, the sector recorded a real increase of 2.4 % (provisional 2.5 %) and a nominal rise of 2.6 % (provisional 2.8 %) over October.
Looking more closely at accommodation: hotels and other lodging providers registered a seasonally adjusted real revenue gain of 0.6 % and a nominal increase of 1.8 % in December 2025 versus November. Against December 2024, their real revenue fell 1.7 % and nominal revenue rose 2.2 %.
In the gastronomy segment, December 2025 sales were 2.1 % lower in real terms and 1.8 % lower nominally compared with November. When compared to December 2024, real sales were 1.8 % down, but nominal sales were 1.4 % up.
