SPD Supports Dobrindt’s Fast‑Track Work Scheme for New Asylum Seekers

The SPD backs Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt’s (CSU) plan to get asylum seekers into work more quickly. “Work is a decisive factor for successful integration, especially to learn German quickly” said SPD parliamentary manager Dirk Wiese to the “Rheinische Post” (Monday edition). He added that, amid the demographic trend, the country urgently needs labor for its economy. “Therefore it is welcome that Minister Dobrindt is now putting the coalition agreement into practice” the politician said.

According to the “Bild am Sonntag”, Dobrindt has devised an “immediate‑in‑work” plan. Under its terms, asylum seekers would be allowed to work after only three months of residence in Germany, even if their asylum application has not yet been decided. The new rules do not impose a work obligation, and a spokesperson for the minister insisted that the new regulations do not change the procedure or outcome of the asylum process.
