Sebastian Fiedler, the internal politics spokesperson for the SPD parliamentary group, has publicly advocated for an expedited ban procedure targeting the most extreme regional chapters of the AfD (Alternative for Germany). Speaking to Handelsblatt, Fiedler explicitly supported the nuanced proposal put forward by Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and Baden-Württemberg Prime Minister Cem Özdemir. These leaders had suggested that the ban proceedings should primarily focus on the AfD regional chapters in Thuringia, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Brandenburg.
Fiedler stressed that it is crucial not to fall into another prolonged, abstract debate about the merits of a ban. Instead, he urged that if the factual and legal prerequisites are sufficiently proven, the authorized constitutional bodies should prepare and launch proceedings as quickly as possible. He deemed it a sensible strategy to concentrate on those regional chapters defined as being “particularly clearly ethnocentric.”
Furthermore, Fiedler believes that the evaluation of the AfD must include its notable connections and political links with Russia, as well as considering the possibility of foreign power influence. He argued that if parliamentary representatives of a party maintain contacts with authoritarian states, disseminate their narratives, or provide indications of further influence, this poses “significant importance” to the resilience of democracy.
