The German foreign trade association BGA expects that the EU‑US customs agreement will no longer survive in its current form following the latest U.S. Supreme Court ruling on President Donald Trump’s trade policy.
BGA President Dirk Jandura told the Funke media group’s newspapers (Tuesday) that, as a result of the decision, the pact is politically and practically void. “It is therefore crucial that Europeans once again seek dialogue with Washington to bring predictability back to trans‑Atlantic trade” he added.
The Supreme Court, on Friday, held that Trump may not justify tariff impositions under a special emergency law. The consequences for the customs deal signed with the EU in the summer remain uncertain. Parliamentary negotiators have put any further work on the agreement on hold as of Monday, while the Brussels‑based EU Commission has urged the U.S. government to provide swift clarity on how to proceed and on the legal ramifications of the ruling.
