Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly common on smartphones for many users in Germany. A survey by the IT industry association Bitkom found that 38 % of smartphone owners regularly use AI features, and the figure rises to 54 % among those under 30. One‑third of respondents said they would be willing to pay a premium for enhanced AI functions.
Voice assistants are already familiar to 64 % of smartphone users, while 56 % use chatbots on their devices. AI in the camera is also largely standard: 42 % turn to AI‑based photo editing such as a “magic eraser” and 37 % let AI suggestions help them draft messages. About one in five (22 %) employ AI to summarise long texts and news.
The survey also highlighted potential growth areas. When asked which functions they would like to see in the future, 49 % pointed to AI spam filters that block unwanted or fraudulent calls, and 36 % expressed interest in further AI support for writing messages.
The data were gathered by Bitkom Research in telephone interviews with 1,006 people aged 16 and older in Germany, including 861 who use smartphones privately. The survey was conducted between the first and fifth calendar weeks of 2026.
