EU Green‑Lights DB Cargo’s Restructuring Plan, Securing 2030 Funding and 2026 Profitability Deadline

The EU Commission has confirmed DB Cargo’s restructuring report positively. According to the “Welt am Sonntag”, citing Deutsche Bahn, both the board and supervisory boards of DB Cargo AG and of DB AG have already approved the freight subsidiary’s restructuring plan. A Bahn spokesperson told the newspaper that the freight arm’s financing and the restructuring plan presented by CEO Bernhard Osburg, which covers the period up to 2030, are now secured.

The Commission has decided that DB Cargo must return to independent profitability by the end of 2026, or risk being broken up. Osburg, who has led the freight division since November, introduced the plan in February. Its core is a sharp cost‑cutting programme: of the roughly 14,000 full‑time positions in Germany, 6,200 would be eliminated. Deutsche Bahn says the goal is to keep at least 8,000 jobs in Germany over the long term.
