Evers Sidelines Berlin Coalition Talks Until SPD and Greens Commit to Concrete Plan

During the ongoing debate over the formation of a government in Berlin, CDU top candidate and parliamentary group leader Stefan Evers reaffirmed his willingness to dialogue with the SPD and the Greens. However, as he told the news outlet “Welt,” he currently rejects an official invitation to coalition talks.

Evers confirmed that he is in frequent conversation with leaders from both the Greens and the SPD. He emphasized that the CDU is ready to engage, stating, “We have our hand extended and our door is open. As soon as I receive the signal that there is willingness to consider forming such an alliance, we will enter into discussions.” Nevertheless, he stated his reluctance to accept an invitation that lacks discernible prospects of success. He assured the public that he would not press the issue, holding the election results in high regard.

The Left Party emerged as the clearest strongest force. Meanwhile, the Greens stated their intent to form a clear coalition with the Left Party. Evers stressed that if this path remains the only focus, he would not be the one to suggest parallel discussions that lead to no outcome.

Evers also sharply criticized recent decisions made by the Berlin Left parliamentary group. He pointed out that agreed-upon conditions for the exploratory talks had been retroactively diluted. He mentioned, “A document was drafted where the strengthening of the police and the federal protection service is no longer included, and a completely different definition of antisemitism was chosen.” According to Evers, the Left Party had effectively withdrawn its consensus before any serious exploratory dialogue could even begin.
