SPD Leader Accuses U.S./Israel of Violating International Law in Iran Attacks, Demands Unified European Response

On Tuesday before a SPD faction meeting, Mathias Miersch, the parliamentary group’s leader, called the attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran a clear breach of international law. “We are certain that, based on what we know, international law has not been respected at the moment” he said. “That must be highlighted, especially by states that depend on the sustainability of the international order”.

Miersch further clarified that his comments do not amount to a loss of sympathy for the Iranian regime or a denunciation of its leader, Ali Khamenei. “We’ve also expressed that we don’t mourn those who have lost their lives at the hands of the regime” he added, noting that the focus now should be on ensuring a future for Iran that can only be achieved through negotiations.

He stressed that Europe must act in a coordinated, unified way and that, in the coming days, the coalition will need to continue strengthening the bridges that will allow progress to be made.
