SPD and CDU Present “Responsibility for Brandenburg” Pact, Promising Cuts and Structural Reform.

Nearly two months after the SPD‑BSW coalition in Brandenburg collapsed, the Social Democrats and the CDU unveiled their coalition agreement for a new partnership.

The document, titled “”Responsibility for Brandenburg”” places a strong emphasis on cuts for citizens. It calls for a comprehensive package of measures aimed at structurally improving the state’s finances. Any new spending would have to be offset by matching savings, especially regarding long‑term expenditure commitments. The agreement prioritises the core functions of the state and its administration-police, justice, education and the financial administration.

The coalition’s core objectives are to review programmes, eliminate duplicate structures, simplify procedures and focus the state on what is essential. They also stress the need for a law‑enforcing state and a politics that brings people together instead of dividing them. The parties say their priority will be stability, security and reliability, and that they will do what is necessary without postponing what is right.

Concerning cabinet roles, the SPD will control six ministries and the CDU three. Specifically, the SPD will retain the premier’s office and hold responsibility for:

– The State Chancellery
– Finance
– Justice and Digitalisation
– Science, Research and Culture
– Labour, Social Affairs, Health and Social Cohesion
– Agriculture, Food Economy, Environment and Consumer Protection
– Infrastructure and Regional Planning

The CDU will oversee:

– Interior and Municipal Affairs
– Education, Youth and Sport
– Economy, Energy, Climate Protection and Europe.
