Merz Discusses Middle‑East Tensions and Strengthening German‑Japanese Ties with Japan’s First Female Prime Minister

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz spoke on Thursday with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. In the call they discussed the geopolitical climate, the situation in the Middle East, trade issues and the supply of critical raw materials, according to spokesman Stefan Kornelius of the German government.

Both leaders agreed to deepen the friendly ties between Germany and Japan and highlighted the importance of their partnership within the G7 and G20 forums.

Takaichi has been Japan’s Prime Minister since October 2025, becoming the country’s first woman to hold the office following her party’s landslide victory in the early parliamentary elections.
