Green Leader Dröge Uncertain Palmer Will Join Özdemir’s Baden‑Württemberg Cabinet

In an interview with the news portal T‑Online, Katharina Dröge, the Green Party parliamentary group leader, said she does not expect her colleague Cem Özdemir to bring Tübingen’s mayor Boris Palmer into his cabinet after the recent election win in Baden‑Württemberg. “I don’t think he’d do that” Dröge replied when asked how she would react if Özdemir appointed the controversial former Green politician as a minister. She added that she is confident Özdemir will build a diverse cabinet that receives broad support from the party, and that he will find a way to make it work.

Dröge also made clear that she does not anticipate Özdemir taking on a more national role in the future. “He has, from his perspective, got the most prestigious position available – Minister-President of Baden‑Württemberg” she said. “Therefore he is already focused on Baden‑Württemberg. We’re proud of what he has achieved”.

Speaking about internal debates on the Greens’ political direction, Dröge said, “I’m not interested in factional struggles, honestly. In the end, we’re all Greens in this party”. She noted that it is impossible to replicate an election campaign 100 % for the next one. “A few months ago, many said we should do it the way the new New York mayor Zohran Mamdani does; now a lot of people say, ‘Wow, what Özdemir has managed, let’s do it like him.'” Simply copying others, however, is not the solution.
