CDU Leader Urges Small Reactors, Industry Demands Low‑Cost Power

Deputy chair of the CDU/CSU Bundestag faction, Sepp Müller, sees a chance for a nuclear comeback in Germany. In a Wednesday interview with “Bild”, he welcomed the comment from Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who had called the abandonment of nuclear power a strategic mistake. Müller added that nuclear has a future if the country can develop small, safe reactors that produce affordable electricity.

He also urged that Germany should pursue nuclear fusion. “Fusion will become an important energy source for Germany” he said, noting that the federal government is doing everything to advance the technology.

Industry leaders share this optimism. Oliver Zander, chief executive of the employers’ association Gesamtmetall, told the paper that manufacturers need low electricity prices and reliable supply to remain competitive. According to him, only a larger energy mix can sustainably keep prices down, and nuclear power could make a significant contribution. “Germany must look at the subject without prejudice” Zander said.
