German Bundestag President Klöckner Arrives in Kyiv for First German Speech to Ukraine’s Parliament

Julia Klöckner, President of the German Bundestag and a member of the CDU, arrived in Kyiv on Wednesday morning. She will become the first German representative to deliver a speech before the Ukrainian parliament, the Bundestag announced. The invitation came from Ruslan Stefantschuk, President of the Verkhovna Rada.

During her visit Klöckner will meet with her Ukrainian counterpart, President Volodymyr Sewenkyj, and representatives of the parliamentary opposition. The discussions will focus on Germany’s continued support for Ukraine, the geopolitical situation, and the resilience of parliamentary democracy in wartime-topics that have kept the Ukrainian parliament active since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022.

Klöckner stressed that even as global attention turns to the Middle East, the war in Ukraine must not be overlooked. “Those who fail to see this risk downplay its importance for security in Germany and Europe” she said. “If the law of the stronger prevails in Ukraine, no country in Europe can claim real safety. That is why we support Ukraine and work to strengthen parliamentary cooperation”.
