German security authorities are warning about the radicalization of young men within “Active Clubs.” The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) informed the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” that since the spring of 2024, there has been a noticeable increase in the establishment of numerous regional Active Clubs across Germany.
These sports groups are being characterized by the constitutional protection agency as an organized effort to draw young men towards the far-right spectrum. The authorities stated they are monitoring the scene closely and confirmed they possess “insights into several relevant individuals who have a corresponding connection” to the issue.
Security agencies are also identifying links between the club scene and political parties. According to the Bavarian State Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Patrick Schröder-the vice-state chairman of the far-right party “Die Heimat” (formerly NPD) in Bavaria-is alleged to have developed a “roadmap” for establishing these clubs throughout Germany.
The State Office of the Constitution noted that the clubs primarily function as a mechanism for closer networking and collaboration among various parties and groups within the extremist scene. Young men are reportedly being gradually radicalized and integrated into the movement through the combination of physical fitness and an ideology of “white superiority.” Both the federal and state branches of “Die Heimat,” along with Schröder, have not responded to inquiries regarding his role or the party’s involvement.
Currently, 22 such clubs are listed on related social media platforms in Germany. Although it is unclear to outside observers exactly how active these clubs truly are, the authorities remain concerned about the potential for violence. According to the Bavarian State Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the clubs aim to train martial arts in preparation for an “allegedly forthcoming racial war.”
