The federal government has said it will not get involved in the debate sparked by the CDU over a potential power‑sharing arrangement in Baden‑Württemberg. “I believe it is proper that government formations are decided in each state, so I have nothing to comment on” deputy government spokesperson Steffen Meyer told the dts news agency on Wednesday.
Meyer added that, despite earlier leaders having stepped into state matters-most notably during the 2020 state‑premier election in Thuringia-he was confident a “tactical state government” could be built in Baden‑Württemberg. “We look forward to working together once that happens” he said.
The issue stems from the voting pattern in the state parliament. Although the Greens, led by top candidate Cem Özdemir, drew more votes than the CDU in Sunday’s election, the two parties ultimately secured the same number of seats once votes were translated into mandates. Consequently, a proposal within the CDU to introduce a rotation principle for the office of state premier was put forward.
