Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called for an alternative after Hungary blocked the promised €90 billion loan. “We need a Plan B” he told “Politico” and “Die Welt” on Wednesday, adding that the problem isn’t just Ukraine’s but also Europe’s. “We all need this Plan B” he said.
Zelenskiy reminded listeners that Ukraine defends freedom across all of Europe, not just Ukrainian values. “Our European partners and real friends know that we are protecting more than just Ukraine” he added, describing the situation as a “very big challenge for all of us”.
The president sharply criticized Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. “He is on the side of the Russian president” Zelenskiy said. According to him, Orbán stops “everything for Ukraine”: money, weapons and “our path to the EU”. He noted that Orbán is the only one who does not fire rockets at Ukraine or send soldiers, unlike Vladimir Putin.
Zelenskiy also accused Orbán of extortion, claiming that the European Commission told him that Hungary wants Russian oil, and that if Ukraine does not redirect it, they will block the money. Ukrainian officials say a Russian attack at the end of January damaged the pipeline.
