Fuel prices have risen sharply, prompting the German transport sector to warn that consumers will face higher costs. Dirk Engelhardt, spokesperson for the Board of the German Association of Freight Transport, Logistics and Waste Management (BGL), told Bild’s Thursday edition that the surge in fuel prices will pressure consumers. He added that current diesel price hikes could push freight charges up by as much as ten percent in the near term.
Engelhardt also said that higher logistics costs would trickle down to retail prices. “If logistics costs rise, the product on the shelf becomes more expensive for customers” he explained. “This affects all everyday items-from shampoo to a case of beer”.
According to the association, trucks carry 85 percent of all goods in Germany.
