No Red‑Red‑Green Federal Coalition Due to Ukraine Policy Divergence

Former SPD general secretary Kevin Kühnert said at a “Stern” event in Hamburg on Thursday that a red‑red‑green coalition is unlikely at the federal level, largely for foreign‑policy reasons. He noted that the party is “still evaluating things” on the left side, but foreign‑policy positions now form an even stronger deterrent to such an alliance. In particular he cited Germany’s approach to the war in Ukraine. “I can’t understand it – they are uneasy about providing weapons, yet do not want to be like Sahra Wagenknecht” he said, questioning how anyone could justify taking responsibility in that context, a question he felt had no answer.

Kühnert, who now works with the Bürgerbewegung Finanzwende association, had earlier promoted a red‑red‑green coalition as a “serious option”. He does not fully rule out such a partnership in the future, stating he would not commit to a distant future “plan”.
