Beck Warns SPD and Greens Against Coalition with Berlin’s Left Over Security Concerns

Volker Beck, president of the German-Israeli Society, issued a serious warning to the Social Democrats (SPD) and the Greens against forming a coalition with the Berlin Left party. Speaking to Politico ahead of initial talks between the groups, Beck stated that such an alliance poses a significant danger to the security of Berlin and its residents.

He expressed deep skepticism that the planned discussions concerning antisemitism could lead to a solid foundation for a governing partnership. Beck criticized the Left party, suggesting it was willing to agree to “almost anything to keep moving toward a coalition and control of the Red Senate.” However, he stressed that these kinds of assurances are insufficient grounds for building a stable alliance.

The former Green Member of Parliament accused the party of having a “profound problem with antisemitism.” Furthermore, he pointed to “deep-seated involvement within their staff by individuals who have contacts or sympathies with terrorists and organized criminals.” He cautioned that merely including a preamble in a coalition agreement would not resolve these fundamental issues.

Despite these concerns, Beck suggested that both the SPD and the Greens intend to push forward with the partnership talks. He expressed fear that both parties might approach the negotiations with a mindset of “gains and losses,” ultimately settling for vague linguistic compromises. Even though the Left party achieved electoral success, Beck opposed its participation in government. While acknowledging the natural pull to cooperate with them, he concluded that considering the content and the personnel issues realistically, “you actually shouldn’t go through with it.”

Beck concluded his assessment of a potential red-red-Green coalition, stating flatly: “Under these conditions, with this specific Left party in Berlin, no.”
