German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) announced that he will put the European Union’s AI regulation under close scrutiny. “There is a fairly extensive list of proposals coming from industry, including from start‑up companies that want to work with this technology” he said after the EU Council meeting late Thursday night, speaking to the dts news agency in Brussels.
“To address this, the Commission Council has issued a general mandate to launch another “Omnibus” on the whole AI topic” Merz added. “And many of the suggestions will definitely be taken into account”.
He emphasized that the government takes the complaints from businesses seriously. “We aim for Europe to have the same opportunities to advance with AI and to enable the creation of new companies, just as the United States and China do” he said.
Merz did not comment on specific elements of the AI regulation, such as the comprehensive transparency obligations that were originally slated for August. He did, however, say that there would be a “thorough review of the entire regulatory framework”.
