The Social Democratic Party is urging the opposition coalition partner to set up the price‑monitoring office that was promised in the coalition agreement. “We need a price‑monitoring office that creates transparency in the formation of food prices” said SPD deputy chair Esra Limbacher in the Rheinische Post’s Saturday edition.
Limbacher explained that the coalition bargain had established an independent, directive‑free body for this purpose and called for that commitment to be followed through. He added that politicians need to better understand where and how profits are generated in order to design effective consumer‑protection policies.
Although the war in Iran has not produced a short‑term spike in supermarket prices, the party’s representative noted a 30 % rise in German food prices since 2020. “Trust is good, but we must scrutinize closely and be prepared” he said.
