FDP deputy Wolfgang Kubicki criticized his rival for the party chairmanship, Henning Höne, calling his demand for a complete restart of the party incorrect. On Tuesday, speaking to the television channel “Welt” Kubicki stated, “I do not want a new beginning for the FDP; rather, I want a rapid acceleration. We have spent far too much time focusing on ourselves. The people are not waiting for that. They are waiting for answers and for decisive action”. He plans to convey this message clearly during the party conference where the FDP leadership will be re-elected in May.
Kubicki revealed that he is making an offer to his party to regain political significance quickly. He added that if this offer is rejected, he will have to accept the outcome and then assess what happens next. He pointed to his extensive experience and past electoral successes as key assets.
Regarding a potential ministerial role, Kubicki stated that he does not want to become a minister, even if the FDP achieves a place in the next Bundestag and is needed for a coalition government. He remarked, “I have ruled out this possibility my entire life. I could have become minister multiple times” adding that he considers it “not an enviable career choice” as he has built his career with “heart and stomach as a lawyer and parliamentarian”.
Kubicki does not anticipate that the black-red federal government will remain in power until the scheduled elections in 2029. He believes the government is pursuing a “completely wrong policy” and expressed surprise that the Union is getting involved in such matters. According to Kubicki, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) speaks “like a market economist but implements socialist policies” concluding that “this cannot succeed”. He expects the government’s tenure will not be permanent due to the massive increase in internal tensions. He claimed that the accumulated debt money has already been spent, not on investments, but on consumption.
