The SPD, represented through party spokesperson Dirk Wiese, has proposed that firefighters fighting wildfires should be recognized with a special commendation. Wiese stated to the “Rheinische Post” that these personnel risk their “life and limb to save people and livelihoods from infernos and to provide aid in disaster situations-often as volunteers.” He emphasized that it is high time to more clearly acknowledge this extraordinary service to society.
While emergency responders are already being bolstered at the federal level through the National Protection Pact for the Population, the SPD advocates for the concrete honoring of firefighters involved in dangerous severe wildfire catastrophes by issuing a medal, serving as both a gesture of thanks and an official award for their selfless and arduous work.
Wiese noted that regions such as Brandenburg, Saxony, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern have already bestowed wildfire medals, setting a positive example for North Rhine-Westphalia and for the federal government as a whole. For instance, the Saxon State Cabinet commissioned the minting of approximately 8,800 medals in 2022 following fires in the state; the response was so significant that a second edition was subsequently needed. Recently, fires across various locations have kept fire departments extremely busy, including in the Hürtgenwald in the Eifel, the Westerwald, and the Belgian nature reserve Hohes Venn near the German border.
This increased danger reflects a global trend. “Fire weather”-conditions of high fire risk-has been increasing across all continents. In Southern Europe, northern Eurasia, the United States, and Australia, it is evident that global warming has led to increased fire probability and greater burnt surface areas. This warming process will continue as long as greenhouse gases are introduced into the atmosphere, particularly through the combustion of coal, oil, and gas.
