Thomas Erndl, a defense policy politician from the CSU, supports the potential participation of Germany in a military mission in the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking to partner newspapers from the “Neue Berliner Redaktionsgesellschaft” Erndl stated that, as a member of parliament, his group anticipates being involved early on and offered support to the government regarding any possible commitment. He added that the responsibility now lies with the government, particularly the Federal Ministry of Defence, to examine and prepare concrete course of action options. Erndl emphasized that any potential measures must always be considered within a multinational framework, necessitating close coordination with international partners, especially the United States, and relevant regional actors. The goal, according to him, is to take responsibility, strengthen the security of trade routes, while also carefully balancing German interests and international obligations. This follows an agreement reached between the US and Iran to de-escalate hostilities. On Wednesday morning, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) declared that Germany would contribute in appropriate ways to ensuring the free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, though the government has not yet issued an official clarification on what this entails.
