To ensure the security of maritime traffic in the Persian Gulf, NATO is considering dispatching a naval mission to the region. This report, citing European diplomats in Brussels, indicates that within NATO circles, there is significant support for organizing the operation as a NATO mission. One of the perceived benefits of this structure would be the inclusion of the United States. Furthermore, such an undertaking would allow the alliance to demonstrate its continued value to the US. A possible approach involves initially launching the mission as a “coalition of the willing” before integrating it into the alliance’s command structures during the NATO summit in Ankara this July.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte planned a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Wednesday, aiming to mediate disputes among alliance partners concerning the conflict in Iran. Sources within the alliance suggest that the potential NATO mission in the Strait of Hormuz could be the necessary concession to appease Trump, who had recently threatened to withdraw from NATO.
According to the Handelsblatt, discussions regarding the naval deployment are still in their nascent stages, and many aspects remain unclear. However, it is anticipated that talks about the operation are expected to gain momentum over the coming days, despite some uncertainties, particularly concerning the sustainability of the current ceasefire.
