Left Flank Critic Urges De-escalation, Rejects German Role in Strait of Hormuz Security

The leader of the left-wing faction, Sören Pellmann, has rejected any German involvement in securing the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking to RTL and ntv, Pellmann stated that, considering the German federal government, a degree of caution is particularly appropriate, especially when discussing actions guided by military logic. He advised the federal government that it should exercise significant restraint, emphasizing a greater focus on diplomacy rather than power confrontations at this time. According to the left-wing politician, involvement would not be beneficial and would contribute to escalation rather than de-escalation, concluding that Germany should specifically not participate in a military safeguarding of the Strait of Hormuz.

Furthermore, he called for the closure of US airbases located in Germany. Expressing deep skepticism about the necessity of these bases for German security, he said, “Whether the US airbases in Germany serve our security, I dare to put a very large question mark to it”. He noted that a large contingent demonstrating in the East Marshes had already demonstrated that US airbases are unnecessary for peace in Europe.

Pellmann also stated that he does not believe Russian President Putin would view such developments favorably. He dismissed the narrative that Russia is on the verge of taking over Europe, suggesting that Germany’s best course of action is to discuss a peace alliance with its European partners, focusing on increased disarmament and a shared security architecture. He added that, for this purpose, Donald Trump might not even be necessary.
