Multiple Closures Loom Even After Reopening

A section of the Pergamon Museum in Berlin is scheduled to reopen on April 13, 2027, after years of closure. This reopening includes the elaborately renovated hall featuring the world-famous Pergamon Altar. However, this hall is slated to close again after its reopening, according to “Der Spiegel”, which cited an internal construction schedule. The hall is expected to close again for a period of five months in July 2034.

The subsequent closures of other recently renovated sections are also part of the plan. The main entrance, featuring the newly built “Tempietto” is anticipated to function as the entrance for just over three years, starting from April 2027. After this time, it is scheduled to close for more than six years. Furthermore, the Schlütersaal is expected to close again for over five years starting in 2032.

Regarding the partial reopening planned for next April, uncertainty remains about whether this date will be met. Internally, it was stated at the end of September that the “time buffer has been completely used up” noting that “every disruption has a direct impact on the completion date”. However, the Foundation of Prussian Cultural Heritage stated that they expect an opening in the “Spring of 2027”.

According to the overall plans, the museum is set to reopen entirely on July 16, 2037. Interestingly, this date has already been postponed by three weeks; preliminary documentation had originally marked June 24 as the major date. Initially, the renovation was intended to run from 2005 to 2010, but work actually commenced in 2013.
