Expert Slams Coalition’s Cost-of-Living Plan as Ineffective and Unfair

Monika Schnitzer sharply criticized the ruling coalition’s plans aimed at easing the financial burden on citizens. Speaking to newspapers from the Funke Media Group, the chairwoman of the Expert Council for Economics stated that “a price reduction for everyone through a temporarily suspended energy tax is the worst of all the options discussed so far”. She characterized the measure as assistance “with a watering can” suggesting it does not help those who can afford the higher prices. Schnitzer added that it diminishes the incentive to reduce fuel consumption and gives the impression that the state protects everyone, including the wealthy, from all external crises. She concluded that a more appropriate decision would have been to offer targeted support specifically to those genuinely in need.
